The Mentee | Diary of a Disciple

Amidst heavy breaths and weary pants, I had to ignore my tired knees and sore ankles as I kept wondering why we were going up the mountain in the first place. I marveled at his untiring struts up the mount, which I believe must be fueled by his focus on the goal ahead and his physical strength built from years of hammering and sawing away at his father's furniture shed.

Following his instructions have not always been too easy because most times, he already knows what to do before he asks us anyway. This night however, seemed different because the task carried with it a weight of responsibility that made my body resort to sleep rather than go to work. I tried to ward off the influence of sleep as I battled with the thought that there must be a reason why the One who stated boldly that “my Father always hears me”, would ask me to pray. Alas, instead of a voice in prayer, here I was not making any sound save snores of an unneeded sleep. He had said “without me ye can do nothing” and now, my praying Priest asks me to pray along with him? What can my prayer add in effect to this seeming demise of his? Does he really need my help in prayer or just wants company on this mount? Somehow, I feel weighed down by the sheer weight of this task as I peek through half open eyes at my colleagues and wonder why we are struggling with this assignment...

We are called disciples yet here we are with insufficient discipline to help us through this task. I looked through jaded eyes to see him; his brow furrowed and patterned with a strange kind of sweat, as he asked again “could you not tarry with me for an hour?”...he must have seen what was coming ahead; for if I had prayed along, I might have found strength like he did, to face the events about to ensue...and we would have thought he wanted us to pray for him all along...

Luke 22: 39 - 45, 54 - 62 (NKJV)

"And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;
Luke 18:1 (KJV)"

  1. The discipline gap can only be filled in the place of prayer in or out of season.. 'the discipline of prayer' as I believe that the only way to pray is to pray & pray! There is no substitute for prayer. Thanks mate.
