Of the four basic operations in Arithmetic,
Addition and
Multiplication generally tend towards increase.
Interestingly, both symbols seem to differ mainly in
their orientation.

“Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your
dwellings; do not spare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes. 3
For you shall expand to the right and to the left, and your descendants will
inherit the nations, and make the desolate cities inhabited.

The introduction of a plus sign to the left side of a
basic equation is an indication that there will be more value on the right side
of the equal sign.
Beyond being a symbol of His crucifixion, the cross, is
somewhat symbolic of the addition that comes as a result of a personal
encounter with the risen King.
