SUMMARY ATTEMPT | SMALL BUSINESS BIG MONEY | AKIN AKINLABI | CHAPTER ONE

CHAPTER ONE | BEFORE YOU QUIT YOUR JOB TO START A BUSINESS

Entrepreneurship is hard. Very hard.

Nothing is exciting about starting a business and people not buying from you.

The odds are stacked against you. You are more likely to fail than succeed.

As an entrepreneur, you would probably put everything you have into your dreams. Your savings, energy, resources, usually at the expense of your health, family and maybe education. When you fail, it can be a very big problem. I will tell you once again. Being an entrepreneur sucks.

Reasons aspiring entrepreneurs give for wanting to become entrepreneurs

- They Don’t Want A Boss

If you want to become an entrepreneur because you do not want a boss, I have bad news for you; You Will Always Have A Boss.

There will always be someone you are answerable to.

Don’t quit your job to start a business because you don’t want a boss.

- They Do Not Want To Work Long Hours

It might interest you to know that entrepreneurs work longer hours than employees.

The entrepreneur is always working. None of my employees work as long as I do. Please note I did not say “as hard”. From the time I wake up to the time I’m going to bed, I am always working. when it comes to working long hours, it is something you have to do as an entrepreneur.

- They Want More Money…Now

If you want money right now, starting a business is NOT something I will advise you to do. You need a JOB. A job that can pay you for your work at end of the day or week or month.

It is called building a business - it will take some time to see results.

If you need cash immediately, starting a business is not what you should do. Get a job.

- They Just Discovered A New Business Opportunity

There is really nothing wrong with learning a new skill and doing business with it but learning a new skill is not enough to sustain a business.

Big brands are big because they know how build businesses.

Until you know how to build and market a business, you should not rely on the fact that you learned a new skill.

You can practice the new skill you just learned on the side while you keep your job or while you are still in school. As you practice, keep it small and make small mistakes. You can grow into it that way.

- You Need A Strong “Why”

How to make money is not the problem. Don’t focus too much on that. You need to focus on the “WHY”?

Why do you want to build a business?

You need a strong reason. You are the only one that can find out your why. Until you find out a strong why, I don’t think you should venture into business.

Opportunity Is Different From Business

You should not deceive yourself thinking you are doing business by handing over money to someone for guaranteed returns.

You should not rely on such opportunities to sustain you forever. Reasons why are:

- You Cannot Consistently Find Such Opportunities: There is no guarantee you will keep finding such opportunities for the rest of your life.
- You Are Susceptible To Fraud: When you are all about looking for opportunities, there is a high likelihood you will get defrauded. Fraudsters prey on opportunity seekers.
- You Can Become Lazy: When you get addicted to looking for opportunities, You will become both physically and mentally lazy.
- You Are Not In Control: If you depend on opportunities, you will not be in control, and is not good for your financial future.

Once you have convinced yourself with a strong why, then you are good to go.

SUMMARY ATTEMPT | FIVE P'S TO A WOW BUSINESS | BILL MATTHEWS | CHAPTER SEVEN

CHAPTER SEVEN | PASSION TO BE THE BEST

The leaders of many "WOW" companies have passion oozing out of them.

Passion seems to play a major role in how quickly a leader can take an organization into the "WOW" category, and how likely it is that the organization will remain there.

The passion of the leader has nothing to do with education or experience. Passionate leaders tend to be humble, yet confidence. Calm yet assertive. They are genuinely interested in providing the very best product or service to their customers, and creating a work environment that allows each employee to reach their full potential, even if it means the employee might eventually leave the company to pursue their own dream.

Passionate leaders proactively invest in their people and in becoming the very best provider to their customers.

Some of them are passionate about what the business does, others are passionate about being the best, regardless of what the business does and some others are passionate about both.

Many passionate leaders subscribe to the idea of servant leadership and actually view their business as a means to minister to others either directly or indirectly.

Passionate leaders surround themselves with talented people who can offer the expertise they need. In addition, they have an Outside Board but they rely on heavily for on-going, high-level advice regarding the future of the business, as well as personal advisors who can bring the guidance they need in areas like personal finance, banking, law, insurance, health etc.

Passionate leaders are not only willing, but anxious to seek regular and ongoing input from experts who are smarter than they are in specific areas of business, so they don't hesitate to form an Outside Board.

Most well-run companies have an Outside Board. A "WOW" company is never too large or too small to seek the advice of qualified, objective outsiders.

For companies fewer than 200 employees, a group of three unbiased outsiders is usually adequate. They should be from different disciplines, like Finance, marketing, or operations, and they should also be experts in their fields.

Board members absolutely MUST be independent thinkers! Do NOT have your attorney, accountant or anyone you are paying on your board.

It is also common practice to ask each board member to sign a confidentiality agreement since proprietary information will be disclosed by the company.

While some board members do not expect to be paid, it is a good idea to offer them compensation commensurate with their experience level. Some might prefer that a donation be made to a charity in their name.

After finding the first board member, the business owner and first member should choose the next member jointly to reduce the chance of future personality conflicts between members, and so on with the next member.

Passionate - Interested - Entitled (P.I.E) Phenomenon
If allowed to run its course, it can contribute to the disappearance of a family business that may have operated successfully for more than 100 years.

A leader should never stop trying to stay qualified for the job as it changes. In some cases it's me even be appropriate for the leader to relinquish the leadership position to someone more qualified, but only after there's clear evidence that the leader has reached the full potential.

SUMMARY ATTEMPT | THE POWER OF A PRAYING HUSBAND | STORMIE OMARTIAN | CHAPTER THREE

CHAPTER THREE | HER EMOTIONS

When your wife's emotions are in the hands of the enemy, everything gets out of rune and the results are unpleasant and upsetting. When God is in charge, her emotions are an asset and the end result is
soothing.

I'm sure you are already well aware that, your life can be dramatically affected by what your wife experiences in her emotions.

The best way to approach the matter of your wife's emotions is to ask God to give you insight into what your wife is feeling and show you how to pray accordingly.

Much of what happens in a woman's emotions begins in her mind.

When the enemy screams lies and confusion at her, God will use your prayers to put an end to it and bring the silence, clarity, and peace she needs. Your prayers will clear her mind, calm her emotions, help her to see the truth, and make her better able to hear from God.

Emotional healing happens faster within the context of a committed, unconditional love relationship because the hurting person often feels safe enough to face the pain of the past. She doesn't have to try to hold it together, or keep up an image, or pretend there is no hurt.

You are not required to be the healer, or to fix everything, or to have all the answers. Only God can heal damaged emotions, and He will do it from the inside out. But your prayers are crucial to keeping the devil at bay while that is being accomplished.

Praying for your wife can help to fine-tune that priceless instrument God has put in your care. And it will ensure that you'll be enjoying some mighty fine music at your house.

Please pray for your wife that:
1. She will enjoy emotional stability.
2. She will have a clear, strong mind.
3. She will not believe lies about herself.
4. She will feel secure in your love.
5. She will have the joy of the Lord.
6. You will be able to understand her feelings.
7. She will live in peace.

SUMMARY ATTEMPT | THE POWER OF A PRAYING PARENT | STORMIE OMARTIAN | CHAPTER THREE

CHAPTER THREE | SECURING PROTECTION FROM HARM

Often our most urgent and fervent prayers regarding our children are for their protection.

I started interceding for my children’s safety even before they were born, praying for protection from such things as crib death and infant diseases. As they grew, I prayed for protection from violence, molestation, and accidents. I prayed alone, I prayed with my husband, and I prayed with my prayer partners: “Hide (them) under the shadow of Your wings, from the wicked who oppress (them), from (their) deadly enemies who surround (them)” (Psalm 17:8-9).

When Christopher was in an accident, I remembered the times we had laid our hands on him and prayed for him to be protected from car accidents. We had often quoted over him: “For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone” (Psalm 91:11-12). God answers prayer and His promises are true.

I also remembered what the Bible says about the righteous person who fears God — “He will not be afraid of evil tidings; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord” (Psalm 112:7) — I began to feel the peace of God which passes all understanding.

Being a praying parent doesn’t mean that nothing bad will ever happen to your children or that they will never experience pain. They will, because pain is a part of life in this fallen world. But the Bible assures us that our prayers play a vital part in keeping trouble from them. And when a painful thing does happen, they will be protected in the midst of it so it will be to their betterment and not their destruction.

The Word of God plays a vital part in your prayers and your peace. Every time I asked God to protect us from the random violence that seemed to be everywhere, I quoted these Scriptures: “He delivers me from my enemies. You also lift me up above those who rise against me; You have delivered me from the violent man” (Psalm 18:48). “Blessed be the Lord, for He has shown me His marvelous kindness in a strong city!” (Psalm 31:21).

Disasters can occur anywhere. The point is to pray and trust God to answer.

Things happen when we pray that will not happen when we don’t. What might happen, or might not happen, to our children if we don’t pray today? Let’s not wait to find out. Let’s get on our knees now.

SUMMARY ATTEMPT | FIVE P'S TO A WOW BUSINESS | BILL MATTHEWS | CHAPTER FIVE

CHAPTER FIVE | PROCESSES

An organization may have hundreds, or even thousands, of processes. While every organization has processes, the degree to which they have control over those processes can vary widely.

Things that make the processes different at "WOW" companies:

They are:

- Driven by companies strategic plan and initiative
- Well documented
- Clear, leaving no room for misinterpretation
- Repeatable
- Followed to the letter
- Linked to job descriptions
- Linked to incentive compensation
- Employee training and development are built around them
- Continuously re-evaluated
- Someone in the organization is fully responsible to make certain that all the requirements above are met.

The processes at a "WOW" company are not limited to how people do their jobs day-to-day. They include everything from the way the company recruits new employees to the way they be bid them farewell.

A perpetual planning process results in a very detailed to-do list for each and every employee of the organization, all tied to the expected outcomes specified in the plan. The structure needed and people skills required to implement that plan include clear expectations for each job.

The most challenging part about process is making sure that someone in the organization is formally responsible and committed to overseeing them and making them better.

What are the signs that a company may have issues with their processes? Typical symptoms include customer complaints about quality, delivery, accuracy, or customer service.

Most processes can be corrected and improved by qualified employees who are focused on doing things better, even if it means making changes in processes.

SUMMARY ATTEMPT | FIVE P'S TO A WOW BUSINESS | BILL MATTHEWS | CHAPTER THREE

CHAPTER THREE | PLANNING AS A PERPETUAL PROCESS

Many businesses have strategic plans, but few run their enterprises with an on-going planning process.

The real difference between the "WOW" companies versus the majority of others, is that they view planning as a living, breathing, perpetual process, not a project.

The plan defines specific outcomes and due dates with built-in accountabilities that will ensure its implementation and success, and it is regularly and relentlessly reviewed to make sure that it is still accurate so that changes can be made immediately in response to shifts in the marketplace.

Ten steps to create an initial plan and how to turn it into a perpetual process
1. Create a personal vision
2. Establish the organizational vision, mission, values and beliefs
3. Analyze the environmental factors at work in the marketplace
4. Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats - "SWOT" Analysis
5. Revisit the organizational vision
6. Identify the key issues to be addressed
7. Establish quantitative expectations for each key issue
8. Create action plans, due dates, and assign responsibility
9. Allocate resources to accomplish the action plans
10. Establish and adhere to a regular planning review process

SUMMARY ATTEMPT | FIVE P'S TO A WOW BUSINESS | BILL MATTHEWS | CHAPTER TWO

CHAPTER TWO | IT'S ALL ABOUT THE "FIVE P's!"

There are five key factors that all "WOW" organizations share:

1. PLANNING as a Perpetual Process
They run their business using planning as an integral part of what they do every single day without exception.
For them, planning is a process, NOT a project.
While they might go off-site annually to take a fresh look at the plan, many of them probably don't have to because they've adopted perpetual planning as a way of life.

2. PEOPLE Who Fit, Today and Tomorrow
They have highly-qualified, purpose-driven people who have the right attitude that makes them a "fit" for the culture.
They place great emphasis on hiring and developing people who offer both the required skill sets, AND the right attitude.

3. PROCESSES
They have processes in place that are well-documented, precisely followed, and regularly modified to meet the ever-changing demands of the world around them both inside and outside the company.
Well-documented processes tend to reduce costs of operation, improve quality, shorten delivery time, make people more accountable, and contribute to better bottom-line performance.

4. "PERFORMETRICS"
The things we measure are the things that get done.
Performetrics are not limited to the typical budgets, forecasts, dashboards, and other financial measures but also include specific performance metrics/expected outcomes tied to the strategic plan, and cascade down the organization so that each employee has individual measures that are directly or indirectly tied to the outcomes established in the strategic plan.
They place primary emphasis on rewarding individual performance related to measurable outcomes that are totally within the control of each employee.

5. PASSION to Be the Best
Companies do NOT necessarily have to demonstrate passion to reach "WOW!" status, but passionate organizations and business owners seem to get there faster, and are less likely to regress because they continuously strive stay on top.
Passion is most evidently displayed by the organization's leader. Your employees and your customers can feel and see it in your day-to-day behavior.

SUMMARY ATTEMPT | THE POWER OF A PRAYING HUSBAND | STORMIE OMARTIAN | CHAPTER TWO

CHAPTER TWO | HER SPIRIT

Your wife's spirit is the gas in her car. Not only must her tank be full, but her battery needs to be charged, her oil kept clean, her brake fluid replenished, and yes, she must have a good supply of antifreeze for those cold nights.

Without the daily infilling of the Holy Spirit, we all run on empty. Your wife may be running on empty right now and not even realize it.

If a woman doesn't spend enough time every day with the Lord in prayer, worship, and the Word of God, she will lose ground, and the enemy of her soul will run her down.

Many women can get eroded physically, emotionally, and mentally by unrelenting attacks of the enemy and not even be aware that it's happening. And the effects of it will carry over into your marriage. Your wife's relationship with God will affect her relationship with you more than anything else.

Because you are the head of the home and have been given authority over "all the power of the enemy" (Luke 10:19), you can inform him that he cannot lie to your wife or twist the truth of God in her mind. You can pray that your wife will be so solid in the truth that she can immediately identify a lie of the enemy, cast it aside, and listen only to the voice of God.

Your wife also wants to know God's will and be certain she is in the center of it. Having clarity about what God is calling her to do, and then doing it, gives her peace.

Your prayers will help her hear from God and be content no matter what state she is in.

Another good reason to pray for your wife's spiritual walk is that it is far better if both of you are putting your expectations in God.

She must be filled afresh with the fuel of the Holy Spirit each day. She must be charged with the power of God.

Does your wife have enough of what she needs for the distance she has to go today? Has she filled up with the finest? Ask God about this, and He will show you.

Please pray for your wife that:
1. She will be strong in faith.
2. She will grow spiritually.
3. She will spend time in the Word and in prayer.
4. She will have discernment and revelation.
5. She will become a mighty woman of God.
6. She will be a light to others.
7. She will know God's will and live in it.

SUMMARY ATTEMPT | THE POWER OF A PRAYING PARENT | STORMIE OMARTIAN | CHAPTER TWO

CHAPTER TWO | RELEASING MY CHILD INTO GOD’S HANDS

I didn’t have peace when my first child, Christopher, was born because I was concerned about everything. I cried out to God concerning this. He immediately reminded me that Christopher was a gift to us from Him and that He cared even more about our son than we did. I was reminded of the biblical instruction to cast “all your care upon Him” (1 Peter 5:7), and so I did.

From that point on, whenever I had fear about anything, I immediately took it as a sign to pray until I felt peace. If I didn’t have peace right away, then I prayed about it with one or more prayer partners until I did. Daily I released my son to God and asked Him to be in charge of his life. This took the pressure off me and parenting became much more enjoyable.

I had to release my son into God’s hands the time he left for college. God brought to life the words, “For you shall go out with joy, and be led out with peace; the mountains and the hills shall break forth into singing before you” (Isaiah 55:12).

He gave me the knowledge and assurance that after the initial pain of releasing our children there comes joy and peace, both for them and us.

no matter what stage of life our children are in, when we release them to God they are in good hands.

We don’t want to limit what God can do in our children by clutching them to ourselves and trying to parent them alone.

the only way to be sure that God is in control is to surrender our hold and allow Him full access to their lives.

When we release our children into the Father’s hands and acknowledge that He is in control of their lives and ours, both we and our children will have greater peace.

No matter what age our children are, releasing them into God’s hands is a sign of our faith and trust in Him and is the first step toward making a difference in their lives. Prayer for our children begins there.

SUMMARY ATTEMPT | FIVE P'S TO A WOW BUSINESS | BILL MATTHEWS | CHAPTER ONE

CHAPTER ONE

To me "WOW" means a business is impeccably managed in every aspect.

Over the years I've classified businesses into four general categories:

1. Ouch: Leaders have lost control of their businesses, as well as their personal lives.

2. Ho-hum: doing well enough to keep the owner satisfied but are likely vulnerable to regressing back into the "Ouch" category.

3. Gee-Whiz: generally well managed and doing a lot of things right.

4. WOW: (more to come on this in later chapters)

Being a manager it's actually a profession. It requires training.

Gifting or selling some stock a very strong and reliable employee seems like a great idea but it is a decision that almost always causes future problems.

The biggest single reason why business owners advance to the "Gee-Whiz" category is that they are willing to invest in employees who have the skills required to take them to the next level.

Occasionally, it can actually be the business owner's limited competency and skills that presents the major obstacle to growth.

Most businesses are not in the proactive mode of a professional management system, but prefer to get "quick fix" after "quick fix" in order to survive much like the temporary relief of a cortisone injection.

SUMMARY ATTEMPT | YOUR CERTIFICATE IS NOT YOUR MEAL TICKET | PETER OSALOR | CHAPTER FIVE

CHAPTER FIVE

Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; both direct them to do it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each. - Plato

We must accept the fact that times have changed and we must adjust by transitioning from the old style era of the Adam Smith inspired concept of the 'industrialized specialist' which has outlived it's usefulness to a more dynamic, resourceful and ICT based model with skills and creativity take precedence.

It is vital that entrepreneurial education is addressed from an early age, besides, age is no barrier to entrepreneurship as evidenced by Tony Hsieh of Zappos who started selling worms from raw mud when he was 9 years old. Steve Jobs, Richard Branson and Mark Zuckerberg all started off as young entrepreneurs.

The present era has shown over time that the global arena is blind to your credentials but is a wealth creating slave to your skills and abilities.

It is not your credentials that guarantees success in the global / information age but rather your problem solving abilities, critical thinking ability that can discern fact from fiction, you ability to adapt (unlearn and relearn), your creative and innovative abilities and your lifelong love of learning.

The illiterates of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.

SUMMARY ATTEMPT | YOUR CERTIFICATE IS NOT YOUR MEAL TICKET | PETER OSALOR | CHAPTER FOUR

CHAPTER FOUR | EDUCATION

Isn't the reason for getting a job to make money? If money is the objective for getting a job, why not get right to the point and just teach us about money?
- Robert Kiyosaki

The problem is that our school system is training our children to be employees.

Financial education and the transformation it delivers is essential for entrepreneurs

A lack of financial education is the primary reason why most people remain employees.

Since our schools will never admit that they are not preparing our children for the real world, it is up to parents and guardians: a child's first and most important teachers.

What inspires your dream is that you must have identified needs and be willing to provide the solutions. You are an instrument of creation. - Robert T. Kiyosaki

Focus on all three types of education:
  1. Academic education
  2. Professional education
  3. Financial education
